Council of Information Literacy for Higher Education of Beijing

About CILHEB

Beijing Institute of Course of Information Retrieval (CIR) for colleges and universities was established on April 29, 1987. It is an academic organization under the leadership of the Committee of Library and Information for Beijing Academic Libraries and the Institute of Beijing Academic Libraries. It aims to improve teaching and academic study of CIR in colleges and universities, so as to enhance its academic level and teaching quality and further make contribution to the information education.

Since its establishment, the Institute has taken on tasks mainly as follows: studying and improving the CIR; discussing the content and further development of the course; carrying out academic researches and various seminars on specific topics; organizing different activities for the popularization and development of CIR; prompting people to exchange their views and teaching experiments, learn from each other, and make mutual progress, sharing integrative advantages of the local colleges and universities; boosting voluntary bilateral or multilateral cooperation of local colleges and universities; establishing relationship and exchanging opinions with the other CIR education institutes over China.

At present, the rapid development of network and information technology has brought new opportunities and more requirements for CIR. The course now is taken on a deeper and broader meaning. Changes of information resources, information media and information obtaining method require higher instructors’ teaching and academic qualities. In order to provide a platform for instructors engaged in CIR to study, research and communicate, the Association of Beijing CIR delegated teaching and research group of Tsinghua University Library to develop this site. We wish colleagues interested in CIR could actively take part in the development of the site. We will also continuously improve and perfect the site to offer better service. We sincerely invite other institutes to join in and give them valuable advices and suggestions.

Hereon we'd like to give our sincere acknowledgement to Tsinghua University Library for its great support of the project.

Presently, the training for library users and CIR are widely carried on in colleges and universities in Beijing. In order to promote them to a higher level of the information literacy education, to adapt to the current trend of information literacy education both at home and abroad, and to make it in line with the general representation in the international educational field, the Association of Beijing CIR changed its name to the Association of Information Literacy for Higher Education of Beijing (AILHEB) on December 1st, 2004, with the approving of The Committee of Library and Information for Beijing Academic Libraries and the Association of Beijing Academic. We believe that it is of benefit to the institute for its communication with the other academic organizations over the world. AILHEB changed its name to Council of Information Literacy for Higher Education of Beijing in 2009.
